On April 12, 2025, Nouvelle Vague will perform at B90!
The French band was founded in 2003 by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux and was meant to be a one-off tribute to post-punk songwriting, only in a different musical style called bossa nova. The covers included on the group’s 2004 debut album won acclaim, and Nouvelle Vague became a musical phenomenon.
A phenomenon not only skillfully bringing out the power inherent in such legendary compositions as Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton” and The Cure’s “A Forest,” among others, but also innovatively playing them in a musical style we wouldn’t expect from post-punk anthems. The darkness has been replaced by sophistic sweetness and the restlessness by tropical relaxation.
This is bossa nova – a style of Brazilian music based on samba rhythms, developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro.
