New Model Army, Armia

6TH OCTOBER 2013 - NEW MODEL ARMY /UK/, ARMIA /PL/

New Model Army are a legendary global underground cult band. Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980, their beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul, Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times. Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful journey. They have been massively influential in ‘post-punk’, ‘folk-rock’, ‘politico-rock’, ‘goth’, ‘metal’ and all kinds of musical sub-cultures but they have steadfastly refused to belong to any genre.

Without a ‘genre’ audience, and never having had a Top 20 hit single in any country, New Model Army still have album sales in the millions, have attracted some of the biggest producers on the planet (Glyn Johns, Tom Dowd, Andy Wallace, Bob Clearmountain) and have built up an almost religious devotion amongst fans.

Since marking their 30th anniversary at the end of 2010 with multiple retrospective releases and an ambitious series of two-night stands in cities across four continents, the band have endured a series of misfortunes including the loss of almost all their equipment and archives in a studio fire at the end of 2011.

But this autumn they begin a full Worldwide tour with shows across Europe to promote an ambitious new studio album (their twelfth), quite different from its predecessors. Self-produced but mixed by another A-lister, Joe Barresi (best known for extensive work with Tool, Queens Of The Stoneage, Bad Religion and Soundgarden), the new album is filled with multi-layered drums and atmospheric musical textures while sacrificing none of the band’s famous passion and song-writing skills. A full-length film documentary on the history of the band is being finished to co-incide with its release.

Originally formed as a three piece, the current five piece features Michael Dean on drums, Dean White on keyboards, Marshall Gill on guitar and their latest addition, Ceri Monger on bass (although all members are multi-instrumentalists).

This is a remarkable band - as hungry and focused as ever, with a continually regenerating audience and insatiable creative ambition.

Armia – a nationwide concert tour promoting an album „Podróż na Wschód”.

Armia- the band was formed in 1984 as a result of the meeting of three mavericks the Polish underground music scene – Tomasz Budzyński, Robert Brylewski and Sławomir Gołaszewski. Their music, holding lyrics taken from folk and classical music, has created synergy between energetic rock, folk, free jazz and the music avant-garde. A French horn has determined unique sound of the band, and piano, flute, percussion, stringed and ethnic instruments like didgeridoo are a perfect complement to a rock rhythm section. Half mystical, half fabulous lyrics, written by Tomasz Budzyński, have compelled to ponder upon meaning of life and reflection on the human condition. The lyrics have been full of references to the masters of the world literature such as Dante, Beckett, Rimbaud or Kafka. There have been also numerous references to Bible.

Such a blend of poetic lyrics, elaborate instrumentation combined with unhindered artistic scope and expressive music have made Armia the unique and impossible to pigeonhole band.

Ten albums released by Armia won wide recognition among fans and critics. Some of those albums are rated as one of the classics of the Polish rock music. The band was also renowned for its stage performances – there were six recorded live renditions.
